Love for the weekend – crafty shopping edition

Love for the weekend is a weekly round-up of some of my favorite things on the net. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did! This week I went into craft product overload due to seeing a zillion blog posts about CHA and hearing about new craft/art books and getting my monthly digiscrap fix....so....don't say I didn't warn you. If you are on a budget, just skip this week's post, because if you're anything like me you'll want to run to the nearest craft store! Have you heard about the CHA show that happened this week? It's where industry people get together to show off new craft products, teach or take classes, and have lots of fun - as far as I can tell. I've never actually been {although I have been to the Tucson gem shows, happening now, when I was in the handmade jewelry biz. It was awesome. I imagine CHA is equally awesome, but geared more toward paper crafts.} Anyway - if you'd like to see some product previews from the show, check out the paperclipping youtube channel. May Flaum blogged from CHA and afterward, and shared a bunch of photos. CraftTestDummies has a great post about CHA with some product pictures I hadn't seen elsewhere. My personal CHA highlights {based on other people's pictures and videos, of course}: Tim Holtz has distress markers coming out, and some cool pulley wheel things that look fun, and, well, I like his stuff all the time, but those two items in particular feel new and different. Lots of chevrons still, everywhere. Lots of interesting paper stuff - a bunch of designers have papers with resists, and paper embellishments that you color yourself. Lots of journal/albums that have different sizes and shapes of paper {would actually be a good stashbuster DIY project to make your own}. Lots of mixed media stuff. Die cutting stuff is getting more interesting with lots of dimensional stuff, letterpress and embossing supplies, matching stamps, and just more and more designs available all the time. DCWV is combining my favorite crafts - jewelry making and paper - looking forward to more of that kind of inspiration, and after seeing their booth, I want to make a terrarium full of beads {I would add a little succulent plant} to hang from my ceiling. Okay, now for some retail enabling, click away quick if you don't like that kind of thing. I won't be offended. I saw some new {to me, anyway} mixed media art books on Amazon this week. They are going on my wishlist - one published by the people at Cloth Paper Scissors, one by Jenny Doh {formerly of Stampington} and one by Suzi Blu - so I know they will all be fun reads. Here are the thumbnails of the covers, linked to Amazon if you want to find out more about each one: I got my February Digi Files goodies this week - 7 full kits with lots of fun stuff to play with, and some fonts, which was exciting for me since I've been checking out that designer's fonts in her shop. So now I can sample a few and see if I like them. Most of the designers this month are new to me, which is part of why I enjoy the digi files so much - I get to try out a bunch of styles and build my digital stash without spending too much. This banner takes you to the site, if you want to learn more or sign up {no pressure!}: This blog is just so pretty, I had to share. She sells her digi designs, very tempting...

Love for the weekend – rainy day edition

It finally became winter here, which means it's raining a lot, so this week I've been spending lots of time online looking for fun rainy day activities {and lots of time at the dollar store and Ichiban Kan getting inexpensive supplies!} Here are a few ideas: This pinterest board actually has a ton of ideas, and this blog post by the same person is full of preschool-appropriate projects. Here are a few I liked, click the source links to get the how-to.

Source: education.com via Emily on Pinterest

Hope those links gave you some activity ideas for your next rainy day! Browse around Pinterest to find lots more. My printer/fax/scanner broke recently, and I'm trying to decide what to replace it with. The Flip-Pal mobile scanner is tempting me - if anyone reading has used it, can you tell me what you think of it? I love the idea of being able to scan things using a smaller, more portable device, especially now that I've been doing some digital designing - I think it would work much better than a desktop scanner on things like old books. {Yes, that's an affiliate link, but no, I don't actually know if it's a good product or not - I just think it sounds pretty awesome.} On a side note, does anyone know of a super-compact printer that is inexpensive and works well? We live in a tiny house so smaller is always better, and we don't print at home very much so I don't want to spend a lot... For all you craft nerds {and yes, I include myself in that group!}, I saw some stuff about the CHA show. Here are some trend predictions, and a list of product sneak peeks with links to see them all. This is just funny, a spoofy but smart blog post about the wikipedia protest last week. My kids' current favorite bedtime book is Voyage to the Bunny Planet by Rosemary Wells. She is also the author of the Max and Ruby books that my brother and I had when we were little {and my kids enjoy those ones too}. The bunny planet book is better for bedtime though, it's a sweet sing-songy book with kind of a dreamy illustration style, so it's more relaxing. The Max and Ruby books are funny, so they are better for daytime storytime. And my favorite book to read when I feel like a failure as a mom is Go the F**k to Sleep by Adam Mansbach. A word of warning: if you have kids who can read, don't leave this book lying around. The f word is on just about every page. Even some adults will be offended by the language. But if, like me, you've spent many, many evenings trying to get babies or young children to go to sleep, and you've experienced trying to be soothing while wanting to rip your hair out....you'll probably relate. There's a video on youtube somewhere that has Morgan Freeman reading it out loud, again, beware if you are around children or at the office because of all the cursing!

Love for the weekend

Welcome to Love for the weekend, my weekly link-love post! I wanted to start with some graphic design resources, given my recent obsession with all things digital. Plush Possum Studio has been posting lots of Valentine-theme free images, like this set. There is a set of steampunk brushes over at the Graphics Fairy, which I've already used in a digi tag. Some GIMP curves you can download and use for free - I checked and they work in version 2.6 on a Mac. For paper crafters - you are probably going to want all of these dies from Tim Holtz, so don't click over if you have a weakness for that kind of thing. Very temptint. And now some visual craft inspiration from pinterest :)

Love for the weekend

Happy 2012! I've read so many great articles lately I almost don't know where to start with my link love.... Here's a really good one, if your resolution this year is to lose weight or get in shape - the Zen Habits fitness guide. This quote sums it all up, really: "I’ve found that losing weight is simple: eat lots of veggies and plant or lean protein, reduce calories, do some kind of cardio, lift some weights to preserve muscle." -Leo Baubata of Zen Habits. He is absolutely right. The hard part is that most of us don't form healthy habits, so we might eat well and exercise intensely for a few weeks, then we get burned out and quit. I like his idea of starting with 5 minutes a day of exercise. If all you do is that, and swap water for sugary drinks or fresh veggies for a less healthy snack/side dish, you're on your way to getting healthier. Another free graphic from The Graphics Fairy - I can see this feather on a bunch of different projects. This article about deciding on a purpose for Project 365 gave me something to think about. I love the idea of the "lego a day" or something similar, but realistically, the only thing I photograph on an almost daily basis is...my kids. So I have to say, my purpose is simply to keep track of memories. I quietly started project 365 using the iPhone app. Here's my December snapshot: [caption id="attachment_2421" align="alignnone" width="584" caption="December 2011 Project 365"]December 2011 Project 365[/caption] I like that my December pictures are a mix of holiday-themed stuff and random things we did that had nothing to do with the holidays. The app I'm using is Project 365 Pro. It was 99 cents, and I got some itunes gift cards for Christmas so it was free in a way ;) If you aren't trying to lose weight and get healthy this year, I bet this chess cake would be delicious...or you could make it for a party and just have a small piece... Some great photoshop tutorials for digital scrappers - any other GIMP users interested in having them "translated" for GIMP? I've been working through a lot of photoshop tutorials in GIMP so I could write down the steps... Okay, there were a lot more great things to read this week, but I got so busy reading I completely forgot to link them all. Hopefully you get a little inspiration out of these though!

Love for the weekend: holidays!

Love for the weekend is my {almost} weekly link love post. This week, it's all about the holidays - gift ideas, craft inspiration, recipes to try, etc. First up, a stocking stuffer/mini gift idea for wine lovers - wine bottle spill stopper. It looks like these ones also have a cork thing for storage, but see the thin piece of metal that goes around the inside of the bottle? I saw wine being poured with a very similar {if not identical} thing inserted in it, and not a single drop spilled. I plan to get several of these to give to friends. I am from wine country, after all. Next up, so much holiday crafting inspiration you won't have time to actually craft if you read it all. Seriously. I have so many articles bookmarked to read later because I can't keep up on all the awesomeness. Next, how about some graphics to add to digital designs {or print and use in traditional crafting}? The Graphics Fairy has lots of holiday-themed stuff lately, here are a few: holly, a vintage postcard with a girl in the snow, and a santa postcard. If you like holiday crafting, links to all 30 days of my ornament-a-day posts from November are here. Besides linking to an ornament tutorial each day, I posted things like great free graphics I found, and other holiday crafting inspiration from my Christmas pinterest board. I also posted some of my own holiday crafting projects: easy snowflakes easy candy cane ornaments my advent calendar book Here's a fun idea: go on pinterest and find 6 ornaments you love based on those clear glass ones sold at craft stores. Buy a 6-pack {they are on clearance everywhere I look} and make all of them. I went a really easy route and didn't actually do my favorites, but rather tried some that would be easy - so far I have filled two with mini pom poms, decorated two with alcohol ink, and coated the inside of one with glitter. I'll post pictures when they are all finished. Also: get a head start on new years resolutions by incorporating quick workouts into your schedule. Here are some ideas from ACE.

Love for the weekend

Love for the weekend is my weekly link-love post, an assortment of things I saw that I think are worth sharing. I took last week off for Thanksgiving, but I'm back with lots of great stuff to read and look at online! First up, the new Sweet Paul magazine is out. So much eye candy! Have you ever done a December Daily scrapbook/journal project? Ali Edwards made a list of 25 ideas and inspirations for this daily project recording the moments leading up to Christmas. They Daily Digi posted a December Daily guide too, if you want to try a digital version of the project. And speaking of the Daily Digi...it's a new month, which means new stuff in the Digi Files. If you like digital scrapbooking, or designing your own blog images, the membership there is a great deal where you get kits from several different designers each month for about what one kit would normally cost. Click on the banner below to learn more. {affiliate link - I am a happy customer!} Doesn't this broccoli cheese soup sound good? I'm definitely going to have to try making it. I love soups when the weather gets colder, and I've never actually tried making broccoli cheese soup despite the fact that it's one of my favorite kinds. I've probably shared this one before, but I love that there is a website devoted to crafting shows. I subscribe to a bunch of crafty youtube channels, but sometimes it's nice to just go to one place and be able to find a bunch of shows at once. Because I don't have cable TV, watching crafty videos online is one way I relax when I'm tired and want to zone out for a bit in the evening.

Love for the weekend

love for the weekend is my weekly link love post....a random assortment of things I saw + loved this week online. This article about the reality of blogging is fantastic. I blog mostly as a way to keep track of things I love and projects I've made, so I can refer back to it later, but someday maybe I'd like it to be more? We'll see... This list of things to do with pesto gave me some ideas - I think I'll try the pesto + cream + tomatoes over pasta trick tonight! I always like vegetarian entrees that are so good you don't miss the meat, and this sounds perfect. My carnivore husband can have leftover chicken on the side ;) Another source I found for some free graphics: fuzzimo. I just downloaded some scrabble tiles and safety pins, which would work great for digital projects made to look crafty. There are some vintage book pages, textures, and even some very high resoluation old postcards, so lots for the mixed media artist or digital scrapper. And some of my pinterest pins for a little DIY eye candy {as always, source links below the picture will take you to the original blogger's post}:

Love for the weekend

Welcome to love for the weekend, my weekly link love post. Here you'll find an eclectic mix of links to things that caught my attention over the past week, which may include craft projects, fitness tips, beautiful handmade work, tutorials on graphic design, or simply things I find entertaining that I want to share. Here's a fun holiday decorating project - if you don't have the cones used in the how-to, I bet it would work with party hats as a base, or you could even make cones from cardstock {click on the source link below to go to the tutorial}:
And because we could all use some fitness inspiration as the weather gets colder, here's an article about yoga poses that are useful {because they build strength and flexibility for specific things you do in daily life}. Exercise that will make daily tasks easier? Sounds good to me! When I was a kid, I wrote stories all the time - I would tell my mom the words to write down, and then I'd draw pictures. She saved these books, and I'm so glad she did - they are a lot of fun to look at as an adult and see how I thought when I was little. I loved this article about how to get your kids to tell stories because I want to do the same thing with my kids, and my son is old enough to probably really enjoy making his own books.

Love for the weekend

This GIMP tutorial on making photo collages is great - it links to some free collage templates, which I've been playing with, that make it easy to make a professional looking collage out of your pictures. I've used a few collage programs and iPhone apps, but it's nice to really have control over the look of your collage, which you do when you use a program like GIMP or photoshop. I am really loving the digital scrapbooking supplies from the Daily Digi membership I purchased last month. Since I've been focused on learning graphic design and photo editing lately, digital scrapbooking fits right in. I can learn skills that translate to web design and other employable skills, while at the same time making some beautiful page layouts preserving memories of my family's life. I originally wanted to do a traditional baby book for each of my children, but are they done? Nope...so I'm going back through baby pictures as well as more recent pictures and making virtual baby books, which we can have printed sometime down the road. But anyway - I needed a bunch of graphics quickly to get started, and joining the Daily Digi is working well for me. It's inexpensive and you get a wide variety of graphics. I especially love the images files in the Anna Aspnes kit that is included in this month's package. It's more artsy than cutesy, which is how I would want most of my pages to look in a perfect world. {cute is great for the baby layouts, but I want a more creative/artsy feel for most other topics. It fits my personality better.} If this sounds good to you, here's a link {affiliate link, so I get a commission} to find out how to join: a note about affiliate links: if I recommend a product, it's because I like it. I don't sign up for affiliate programs if I have to link to stuff I don't like. So you are getting my honest opinion, nothing more, nothing less. And something pretty to make, pinned from A Beautiful Mess {click the little source link for the how to}:

Love for the weekend: Halloween Inspiration

Love for the weekend is my weekly link-love post. In today's edition, it's all about Halloween! Enjoy... Halloween graphics from the graphics fairy: Skeleton Arsenic label {she has a lot more Halloween images too, just search the blog after you download those two} Have some leftover straws from a Halloween party? Make them into confetti! Here's a really cute way to wrap treats if you are hosting a party. Here is a round-up of a bunch of Halloween-themed printables - perfect for last minute projects!
