Textile Inspired Jewelry
Textile inspired jewelry is becoming very trendy among textile artists, jewelry artists, and customers looking for something handcrafted and unique. Artists like Arline Fisch and Ruth Asawa, who both use metal for textile work, have paved the way and proven that metal is an excellent medium for textile techniques, creating stunning jewelry and sculpture in metal by knitting, crocheting, and weaving. Another contemporary artist, Marilyn Moore, has pushed the boundaries in the craft of basketry using traditional basketweaving techniques with wire to create beautiful, intricate baskets.
Leah, Michon's designer, is understandably awed and inspired by the works of these groundbreaking artists. Leah's textile inspired jewelry combines her organic style of wirework with the techniques popularized by these artists in the second half of the 20th century. She draws on her knowledge of the crafts learned as a child, as well as instructional websites, books and magazines about textiles, to create miniature wearable textile art in silver, copper, and gold.
