Overwhelmed by Spam

Posted by Leah on Jun 4, 2007

I am overwhelmed by the amount of spam comments I’m getting. More than 900 were waiting in my moderation queue just between Friday and now! It is unbelievable.

To the real people reading: is there something you know of that I can install on wordpress to catch some of the obvious spams, so that I don’t have to read them all while I’m trying to find the legitimate comments to approve?

I originally logged on to post pictures from the craft mafia show I participated in yesterday, but now my eyes hurt from skimming nearly 1,000 spam comments, so the real posting & photos are going to have to wait.

Oh hon, welcome to my world!

You should be able to enable something that requires people who post to “type the letters you see in this box” type function, before their comments are approved or added.

Something like that, anyway. It helps a lot.

I hate the spammers!

Thanks Chel - I upgraded to the new version of wordpress, and already it’s helping - maybe it has some kind of automatic spam blocking? Anyway - good to know real people are able to get in here and leave me comments! I almost have all my soiree pics resized & ready, so I’m making progress. :)

I used to use Wordpress, and they had one software program for blocking spam. I loved it, until my host uploaded the new Wordpress, and my program was no longer compatible with it. At least as far as I could figure out. I never could figure out how to add a captcha program to WP…which is eventually why I left WP and went back to Blogger.

Now…as I get to learn webdesign…I’ll be able to design my own template and get rid of the blogger templates, which are so booorring.

Well, I upgraded & at least for now, it seems to have gotten rid of 99% of the spam. Thank goodness! By the way, a good site for learning web design/coding is GNC web creations. The owner has some free classes I’ve taken that have helped me solve a lot of my own web-related problems.

Leah,

On my blog, I use Askimet. It’s a plug-in for WordPress. It works great.
