One of my latest resin pieces, which I just finished over the weekend. (It is for sale in my my etsy store.)
Because I make my resin pieces using deep bezels for a three dimensional effect, they can take several weeks from start to finish, with thin layers of resin and found objects built up one at a time. I like the appearance of floating objects on a colored background. I mix my own colors using dyes, powdered pigments, and even cooking spices or cosmetics, then layer clear resin and objects on top of the custom colored background. Each pendant is finished with a shiny domed resin top to magnify the scene I've created in the resin. Once all the layers have completely set up, I finish these pendants with a handmade Argentium sterling silver bail. It is a very time-consuming process, but I enjoy creating these miniature wearable art pieces. - Subscribe

Hello,
How do you make the pendants with resin? Do you just pour the resin over whatever in a mold and let it air dry. I, would like to make maybe one or two but don’t know where to start. Can you help. I’d really appreciate it. Thanks,
S.Olson, Mesa, AZ
It’s a little bit more complicated than that – resin has to be mixed at a precise ratio according to the manufacturer’s instructions before pouring. Also, you need to watch for bubbles forming and pop them. And since resin fumes are similar to glue fumes, you want to work in a well-ventilated area to avoid breathing in the fumes. Other than that, yes, you basically just pour the resin into a mold and wait a few days for it to cure.
There’s a good book that is an intro to working with resin – it’s by Sherry Haab. If you click on the “book reviews” category in the sidebar, I reviewed it & there is a link to where it is listed in Amazon.
Where do you get your bezels from?
I mostly use found object bezels – tins, lids, bottlecaps, etc. This one is a small aluminum tin.
Did you use a special doming resin? I haven’t found much information about this except that someone used a doming resin from Rio Grande. I’m nowhere near getting a resale license so I can’t buy from them but I can’t find any info anywhere else.
Hi Beth – yes, I use the doming resin from Rio Grande. You could try Envirotex Lite, which I’ve found at local art/craft stores. I don’t like it as well as the Rio Grande one, but it does work.
Are there bails that can be glued to resin pendants so that no drilling is required? If so, what type of glue and bail should be used?
add up /mixed with a little bit of green(leaf),very small, one or two piece,it will be risky, but excited,a balancce of colour.
What is the name of the rio grande resin? I’ve joined them just to buy this but can’t find it at all.
The brand is called Colores – hope this helps!
Thank you for your help. Looks like fun!
A question about EnviroTex Lite: can I paint the inside of the bezel setting with acrylic paint first, then put my collage objects in, then fill in with Envirotex lite? Will the paint run? Also, do I need to seal paper objects with a sealant before putting in the collage so ink doesn’t run?
Yes, you can apply the resin directly to acrylic paint & it won’t run (I’ve done that). And paper objects should be sealed, unless of course you want the paper to become transparent – resin makes paper look transparent, for some reason, and could make ink run too.
Resin pendants are cool. I love how it keeps the colors and items so protected.
recently on t.v. show Beads, baubles and jewels Mark Nelson from RioGrande did segment on the colres doomed resin. if you go to beadsbaublesandjewels.com reference # 908-1 you can get info on it. explains it pretty well. also good dite for other things. i record the show every week. it comes on my pbs channel on sat.at 5p.m.est
Does anybody know if Beads, Baubles and Jewels airs here in the Phoenix area? Have searched and gone on the website to find out and still no luck.
I have no idea – I don’t even know if/when it’s on in my area.
can you put human hair into resin? what other stuff can u use ??
Yes, I’ve seen resin pendants that had human hair in them. You can embed most (dry) objects in resin, it’s a lot of fun.
Your resin pendants are amazing. I make similar resin pendants out of scrabble tiles and people always comment on how good they look. Your round ones look amazing.
