Grey Eyed Scorpio
I have a new featured etsy artist today, Gray Eyed Scorpio. Before we start the interview, check out this preview:
How did you pick your shop name?
I chose my shop name by default. In 1995, I was seeking an e-mail moniker that wasn't already taken. Gray Eyed Scorpio is what I came up with as a descriptor. It's stuck.
This may be obvious, but what is your medium? What kinds of materials and tools do you use?
Fabric is a constant in all that I make. Buttons, especially the unusual sort, are also a favored material.
Tell me a little bit about your process, from a new idea for a piece to the finished product.
Mainly, my ideas come from my own wants. I come up with colors and textures that I want to see together, and make items in the shapes and sizes I prefer. That way I can stand proudly behind what I make, and if something doesn't sell, I'm happy to keep it for myself!
Any advice for aspiring artists/crafters in your medium?
Practice. Don't always play it safe. Don't try to predict what will sell.
Any business advice for artists/crafters just starting to sell their work?
It's hard to avoid, but keep your costs realistic. The display and supply stash will build on its own without going bananas shopping for materials. Above all, enjoy what you do.
What is the last song/album you listened to? (I’m just curious, I love music.)
Regina Spektor. The new one with a yellow cover.
Do you sell your work anywhere other than etsy?
I've tested the waters at a couple of craft shows. Strange Folk is my promised land! The festival is orchestrated well, with lots of foot traffic and publicity, and a focus on greenie life, and DIY celebration.
Are there other websites where we can find you?
I blog about whatever happens to be on my mind, at http://grayeyedscorpio.blogspot.com
Great shop! I love those shirts!
What a beautiful shop!
Who’d ‘a known that a designer named for a creepy crawler would produce such NICE work? Love the tidiness…use of color…practicality…simple elegance of it all!
Yay for my sister in law, grey eyed scorpio! We are actually married to twins, so she will never be able to escape me! I have a custom bag she made for me a year ago and several of her headbands, including the first one she ever made, which I still wear, BTW. Great feature and interview!
