Great New Jewelry Book

Posted by Administrator on Jun 27, 2006

I just got a copy of Joanna Gollberg’s new book, “The Art and Craft of Making Jewelry” (Lark Books, 2006).

Her earlier book on metal crafts is pretty good, especially for beginning metalworkers, so I’ve been looking forward to seeing this new book. I haven’t had time to read it, but just flipping through and looking at photos and subject headings, I love it already.

It appears that there is a lot of information on everything from basic skills anyone working with metal should know to more advanced techniques including marriage of metals and granulation. But it isn’t a dry, text-only technique book - every page has pictures, and there are gallery sections that show pieces illustrating the techniques described in the previous section. Some really inspiring metalwork is featured in this book!

Now I just have to wait for my local book store to get Arline Fisch’s new book on crocheted jewelry…

Learn to make jewelry

Posted by Administrator on Jun 13, 2006

For people interested in learning to make jewelry from wire, here are a couple sites with very good tutorials:

Studio Heath
Eni Oken

These two artists make intricate jewelry from silver wire, and are very skilled at explaining their techniques, as well as photographing steps needed to create their jewelry.

Resin Jewelry added to site

Posted by Administrator on Jun 13, 2006

I’ve added photos of some resin jewelry to the site. These pendants are tiny three-dimensional collages, which I’ve made wearable by adding handmade pendant bails.

Carnival of Creators

Posted by Administrator on Jun 8, 2006

Some artists (jewelry and otherwise) have gotten together and formed a “Carnival of Creators” which is a monthly blog posting with links to interesting art and creativity blog postings. Every month, a different person hosts the carnival. This month, it was hosted at Gracklestew.

I found some really interesting articles through browsing the links. Luann Udell has lots of articles on creativity and being in business as an artist - I think I could spend an entire day browsing her blog.

Cleaning and Caring for Resin Jewelry

Posted by Administrator on Jun 5, 2006

Since resin jewelry is so different from metal jewelry, I thought it would be useful to post a few tips on caring for it.

Resin is a kind of plastic, so it can be cleaned with water and hand soap or dish soap - very easy!

Resin jewelry doesn’t need to be polished. If it starts to look dull or dingy, try cleaning it under running water with a little hand soap. If that doesn’t help, it’s possible that the resin has been scratched, in which case the best way to fix it involves fillling the scratches with more resin. In my experience, scratching has not been a problem, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

I recommend storing resin jewelry wrapped in tissue, a plastic bag, a tissue filled box, or a cloth pouch. This is similar to the way I recommend storing silver, except that with resin, there is no need to worry about keeping it dry and tarnish free, so really any container that will provide a cushion between it and all the other objects in a jewelry box is fine.

Open Studio Summary

Posted by Administrator on Jun 5, 2006

I just finished the first weekend of Open Studios. Thanks to everyone who came, it was great meeting you, and I hope to see more people next weekend!

The Southwestern Voodoo jewelry, and my resin pendants in general, seemed to be the most popular items this year. In fact, I’m almost out of Southwestern Voodoo pieces, so I’ll try to make a few more between now and Saturday. If you’ve visited my site before and are wondering what I’m talking about, yes, I know, there are no pictures of my resin jewelry up! I’m working to fix that. Resin is tricky to photograph, but I think a few of the pictures I took at Open Studios will come out well enough to share online.

People also were interested in my freeform wirework - especially the pieces that incorporated woven wire and fused metal.

Some people wondered why there weren’t more paintings up, (I share a studio space with my husband, who is an acrylic painter) so I told them about Chris’s show at Cafe Roma in Berkeley.
