Wear What You Love

Posted by Leah on Oct 6, 2008

I just read a great post over at The Beaded Lily’s blog about how people are sometimes afraid to wear jewelry that stands out. So sad! There is so much gorgeous art jewelry out there, and many people apparently love it but are afraid it’s too bold to actually wear.

I say, if you love it, wear it - don’t be afraid to show your personality.

If you are interested in felt, check out the felting forum blog - they post entries from monthly felting challenges, so it’s a great place to see all kinds of different things people are doing with felting techniques.

Inspiring blog posts for today

Posted by Leah on Aug 21, 2008

There is just too much good blogging going on these days (which reminds me, I need to finish my post about the Arte y Pico award, kindly given to me by TWO fabulous bloggers, Silver Canyons and Macaroni and Glue - but I’m having a hard time choosing just five blogs to nominate!)

Today I ran across a great post titled “Of Jealous Husbands and Subliminal Inspiration” over at Thyme to Dream. Her post is about Alexander Calder, one of my favorite artists and a definite inspiration for me. Be sure to check out the links at the bottom of the post to learn more about Calder.

Then over at Lucky Girl’s blog, I found a picture of a sterling silver top she found while searching etsy.com. If you have $5400, you could own your very own silver shirt!

Over at the Fabulous Artistic Moms blog, Amy of New England Quilter was kind enough to put together a welcome to our new team members, complete with pictures from their shops.

And here’s a fun demo post of how one artist makes her sterling silver and resin earrings. If you’ve ever wanted to see the steps involved in making metal jewelry, this helps demystify it a little.

Craft blog posts I love today

Posted by Leah on Aug 20, 2008

Found a couple great craft-related blog posts today & had to share.

This one has great ideas for organizing craft supplies. It’s written for scrapping stuff, but you could easily use these tips for storing and organizing lots of different kinds of craft supplies.

If you love jewelry tools, or were wondering about basic tools to get started making jewelry check out this post from Shiny Adornments. Unfortunately, reading it reminds me that I still really want a circle cutter…you really can’t ever have too many tools.

Twitter

Posted by Leah on Aug 20, 2008

Have you ever wished you could blog on your cell phone? If so, twitter might be the perfect thing for you. Known as “micro-blogging,” on twitter, people write updates under 140 characters - and often send and receive updates from their cell phones. It’s blogging and social networking in one - you follow people if you want to get their updates, they follow you if they want yours.

It’s a funny system - some people use it mainly for marketing, some people “tweet” when they update their blog to let their followers know, some people tell you what they had for breakfast, and some people have one-line conversations with friends (this reminds me of when I was a freshman in college & my roommate and I would email each other one liners from different rooms in the apartment - email was still kind of a novelty, and this was WAY before texting. We didn’t even have cell phones!). If you want to know more about twitter, check out this hilarious (but useful) article on twitter etiquette.

Want to follow me on twitter?

Brillante Weblog Premio 2008 Award

Brillante Award

Brillante Award

Thank you so much to Lucky Girl for nominating me for this award, for “interesting, happy and sparkling style blogs.” Check out the jewelry in her etsy shop!

Here are the rules for the next recipients of the Brillante Weblog Premio 2008 Award, established in 2005:

l. The award may be displayed on a winner’s blog.
2. Add a link to the person who you received the award from.
3. Nominate up to seven other blogs.
4. Then add their links to your blog.
5. Add a message to each person that you have passed the award on to in the comments section of their blog.

I’m nominating one blog instead of seven, because I’ve seen this blog grow and become a fantastic resource for jewelry makers and jewelry collectors alike. The author of this blog also introduced me to entrecard, a service through which I’ve discovered dozens of other fantastic blogs (but I’ll get to those later). Okay so here’s my nominee: Shiny Adornments. Check out her recent profile of Indigo Skye, a fabulous jewelry maker & friend of mine.

Blog Tips

Posted by Leah on Aug 13, 2008

I’ve been reading a lot of blogs lately, as I keep discovering new ones via entrecard. Here are a few things I recommend, to make a blog easy to read, interesting, and user-friendly:

  • Have content above the fold - not just a bunch of ads. If all I see are ads, how do I know what your blog is about?
  • Try to limit the number of ads and widgets, even though they are fun, because they can make your blog load slowly & start to look cluttered.
  • Include interesting photos in your posts when possible - it really makes me want to read more.

Another FAM blog round-up

Posted by Leah on Jul 25, 2008

The members of FAM are prolific bloggers - hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did!

S & G Hullet blogs about having virtual coffee with friends online - and points you do a few great etsy shops, in case you are in the mood to shop.

Holy Craft! (cute name for a craft biz, isn’t it?) shares some adorable blocks she made with Amy Butler paper. These are supposed to be for toddlers - the print is so stylish and cute - if your little girl is a two-year-old fashionista, these would be perfect!

Valerie’s Gallery is about to have a one year etsy-versary and she’s celebrating by giving away a beautiful felted bowl with grapes on it. Head on over and leave her a comment for a chance to win it!

Feel like shopping? Nikki of Nikki’s Nacs has found a bunch of really cute black and white items on etsy to tempt you…

Esther at The Sister’s Studio writes about her new bathroom furniture and the lovely accessories she got for it on etsy.

Retro Rugrats has a humorous post about today’s version of a 50’s housewife. Very entertaining for sure!

Lorissa of LJ Design & Photo writes about her daughter starting preschool in the fall - a touching post that I’m sure all moms can relate to.

And you can always catch up on the latest FAM news by reading the team blog!
